In sad news...Tura Satana has passed on into the next world taking her voluptuous talents with her yesterday. She was 72 years young. She lived the kind of life that most of us could only read about...learning martial arts to exact revenge on those that wronged her and turning down Elvis Presley's proposal. Her life could make an intriguing biographical film one day. She will be best remembered for her role as Varla in the notoriously classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! directed by Russ Meyer...a film that I was introduced to during my period of watching 60's/70's exploitation films.
Unfortunately, I was busy at work as an indentured servant when I heard the news...so, I was unable to post anything until today. However, upon researching the somber news...I learned that the remake of Meyer's controversial film is still very much in the thoughts of Quentin Tarantino's busy head. So, I thought...I wonder if Tarantino would go full steam ahead with these plans once he heard of his friend's passing. A sort of tribute to the late Satana.
Here...let me get you up to speed...
In early 2008 there was a rumor circulating that Quentin Tarantino's next project would be a remake of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and that he was interested in casting Britney Spears and Eva Mendes in the film. Soon...it was learned that he found the female lead of Varla in the form of porn superstar, Tera Patrick. Patrick got all excited about the rumor and offered the quote: "I was built for this part." Now...I'm sure pornoheads got all excited at the prospect of having Tera Patrick star as Varla in the remake...but, I don't see it. Have you ever seen any of her films? She delivers her lines with the intensity of a corpse. But, anyway...the rumors subsided and Tarantino went on to do the awesome Inglorious Basterds.
Now...fast forward to the present...it has been reported that Tarantino and Satana had been talking in terms of keeping true to the original film. She spoke highly of him and has stated that the remake will definitely get made. I know no other director that could make a remake as true to the original than Mr. Quentin Tarantino. The man thrives on exploitation films...so, he could really make something out of this project. I only hope this sudden unfortunate news sparks some inspiration in the genius director's creative heart and he gives us a worthwhile journey back into the world of Varla. Sans Britney Spears...of course.
My personal dream casting of Varla would be...
She would make you fall in love with her...then cut your heart out and feed it to you. She would fit in perfectly as Varla. Doubt it would ever happen...but, I read somewhere on the interwebs that Asia Argento's name was also being thrown around as a possible Varla. Tarantino and Asia....a match made in cinematic heaven. Speaking of heaven....I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the lovely Tura Satana with this version of the Misfits' Astro Zombies. She was also in the film The Astro Zombies.
